Why are omega-3 fatty acids essential?
We’ve received a lot of questions about omega-3 fatty acids. Many of you know that they are important, but it can be difficult to understand the different types, their benefits and also the best way to consume them. Before and during pregnancy, it is particularly important to consume the recommended amount. Here we explain everything you need to know.
What are omega-3 fatty acids, and why are they important?
They are essential to our diet. Your body cannot produce them on its own, so you need to consume them. It helps to prevent depression and ADHD, contribute to the formation of certain organs and reduce inflammation in the body. So they play an important role in your body and offer a variety of health benefits.
What are the different types?
ALA, alpha-linolenic: used by the body mainly for energy, but can be converted, albeit inefficiently, into EPA and DHA. Found in flax, chia, etc.
EPA, eicosapentaenoic acid: found mainly in animal products such as oily fish and can be converted into DHA. Supports the heart, immunity and inflammatory response.
DHA, docosahexaenoic acid: the most important of the Omega 3s, as it is an essential component of certain parts of the body, notably the brain, retina, etc. DHA is found mainly in animal products such as fish, eggs and grass-fed beef.
Why is DHA the most critical fatty acid during pregnancy?
Because it is a component of the brain, aiding neurological and retinal development and possibly the baby’s intelligence. It is essential for the growth and development of the infant’s brain, as well as for the day-to-day functioning of the adult brain. DHA is also a key component of the eyes and heart.

How do fatty acids promote a healthy pregnancy?
They provide energy, support development, reduce inflammation, promote heart health and support immunity. Omega-3 fatty acids can also help prevent premature labour or delivery, reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia and increase birth weight. What’s more, they can help prevent depression in the mother by preventing post-partum depression.
How do omega-3 fatty acids help in the early stages of a baby’s development?
Because they play an important role in brain development, omega-3s can help prevent cognitive and visual impairment.
How much should women take during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Gynaecologists generally recommend that women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant take around 200 to 300 mg of DHA a day to improve the outcome of the pregnancy.
During breastfeeding, gynaecologists also recommend that mothers supplement their diet with 300 mg a day.
Our Omega DHA Plusbaby contains 200 mg of DHA, which promotes a healthy pregnancy and encourages the early stages of life.
What are the vegan sources of Omega 3 – DHA?
If you’re following a vegan diet, it can be more difficult to ensure you’re getting an adequate amount of nutrients, especially if you’re preparing to get pregnant or are expecting. Fortunately, there are some options to ensure healthy development for you and your baby.
For the body to obtain and use omega 3 – DHA or EPA as part of a vegetarian or vegan diet, it needs to eat foods containing ALA, or alpha-linolenic acid. ALA is found in seeds and nuts such as linseed, walnuts, echinacea, chia seeds, etc. Unfortunately, numerous studies have shown that the conversion of seeds and nuts into omega 3 – DHA is minimal, or even non-existent.
Fortunately, there are food supplements on the market, such as oil made from micro-algae, which can increase DHA levels in blood plasma. Our Plusbaby omega 3 – DHA capsules are made from micro-algae and are recommended for all diets including vegetarian or vegan.
Are vegan omega 3 – DHA supplements as good as omega 3 – DHA fish oil?
Research shows similar effects on the body when taking vegan and animal omega 3 – DHA. Fish consume their DHA from algae, so vegan supplements using algae and algae oil obtain DHA directly from the source. Further research is needed into the long-term effects of vegan omega 3 – DHA supplements, but studies have suggested health benefits comparable to those in fish oil.

As you can see, omega 3 fatty acids contribute to a healthy pregnancy for many reasons. Intake of omega 3 – DHA during pregnancy is essential, but don’t forget that the benefits can be obtained from the pre-conception period right through to breast-feeding.
